This 2-part course provides examples of low-cost maintenance and safety improvements on roads. The importance of road safety, and how it can be integrated into local transportation construction, operations, and maintenance will be stressed. Attendees will given numerous actionable items that will make their road network safer. The class will be a fun combination of lecture, discussion, and group activities. We look forward to seeing you at the workshop.

Session One - Introduction, Why is crash reduction important?, Preventing Roadway Departure: Keeping Vehicles in their Lane - Low Cost Strategies, Questions.

Session Two - Preventing Roadway Departure: Vegetation and Sight Lines, Creating a Forgiving Roadside: What to do with hazards in the Clear Zone, Questions and a Course Review.

Roads Scholar 1 Credit - Colorado LTAP will offer RS I Elective credit for participating in this training and providing CO LTAP a copy of your certificate upon completion.  

Course Description:

This course provides an introduction into SSA as well as low-cost, ready-to-use improvements that enhance the safety of roads and highways. Various data sources to evaluate roadway safety are also discussed. A synthesis of SSA reference materials and videos will be identified and distributed (virtually). The course will present LCSI countermeasures (along with their relationship to SSA) and their associated crash reduction/modification factors (CRF/CMF) as identified on either the CMF Clearinghouse or other relevant publications. Information on using the CMF Clearinghouse and how to evaluate various CMFs are discussed. Countermeasures for specific areas including roadway segments and curves, roadsides, unsignalized intersections and signalized intersections are covered.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this course, participants will be:

  • Familiar with the Safe System Approach, philosophy, goals, components and methods
  • Able to relate SSA to LCSI programs by examining intended vs unintended consequences of safety countermeasures
  • Able to describe/discuss some potential LCSIs for:
    • Roadway Segments & Curves
    • Roadsides
    • Un-signalized Intersections
    • Signalized Intersections

Registration Fee

The registration fee for this workshop is $50 per person for employees of government agencies and $75 per person for non-government agencies. Fee includes any class handouts and lunch. Registration can be paid online, or via invoice upon special request. Please contact cltap@frontrange.edu for questions.

Cancellation Policy

Please be considerate of those on the waiting list, cancel early if necessary. A full refund will be made if you cancel no later than 3 business days prior to the training day; otherwise, you will forfeit the registration fee.

In order to receive credit for this class, attendees must stay until the end when it is dismissed by the instructor and class certificates are awarded.
